Winningest high school football coaches of the past 10 years

While John McKissick of Summerville (S.C.) is easily the active coach with the most wins - an amazing total of 601 victories - the coach with the most wins in the past decade can be found about 400 miles to the west of McKissick's home state of South Carolina.

George Quarles of Maryville (Tenn.) has averaged more than 14 wins a season during the past decade. Think about that for a second. Besides having to finish a season unbeaten at 10-0, Quarles also had to win at least four playoff games every year to attain the impressive number of 143 wins in 10 seasons.

Included during that 143-win decade is a 74-game win streak that ranks as the sixth-longest among 11-man schools in national history. Quarles also won six state championships during the decade and has won the region championship every year during the run. Five times Maryville went 15-0 and has only six losses in the 10 years. Quarles' worst record during the decade is a 13-2 mark in 2009.

Nearby Alcoa is home to Gary Rankin, who ranks second on the list with 130 wins. He has 90 of his wins at Alcoa (2006-2012) and 40 at Riverdale (2003-05). Two of those wins have provided Quarles with two of his losses.

Third on the list is John T. Curtis of Curtis (River Ridge, La.), the second all-time winningest active coach with 520 career wins. He has won seven state championships and nine district titles during the 10-year span.

Curtis is part of a three-way tie for third with 128 during the past 10 seasons, along with Dale Mueller of Highlands (Fort Thomas, Ky.) and John Roderique of Webb City (Mo.). Mueller has also won seven state championships, including the last six in a row, and has also won nine district titles. Roderique has won five state championships, including the last three in a row. He's also won 10 straight league championships and has a current 45-game win streak.

A pair of coaches on opposite sides of the country come in tied at No. 6. Butch Goncharoff has 127 wins at Bellevue (Wash.) over the past 10 seasons, as has Sean Callahan of Armwood (Seffner, Fla.). Goncharoff has collected eight state championships, including the last five in a row. He has also won eight league titles. Callahan has won three state championships and nine district crowns.

Four coaches are tied for the remaining spots with 126 wins each. They include Bob Beatty of Trinity (Louisville, Ky.), Hal Lamb of Calhoun (Ga.), Jim Oddo of Charlotte Catholic (N.C.) and Jeff Traylor of Gilmer (Texas).
