Not much separated the top two teams in California on Thursday night. In fact, the Southern Section Open Division championship game between Mater Dei (Santa Ana) and Centennial (Corona) went to overtime and then was decided by a 3-point basket at the buzzer.
Nalani White
drilled a wide-open trey from the right wing to give Mater Dei a thrilling 83-80 victory in a showdown of undefeated teams.
With the win, the Monarchs (20-0) jumped to the top of the rankings, while Centennial (22-1) goes to No. 2. But there's hope yet for the Huskies, who could face Mater Dei again in next week's Southern California Regional.
Seven other Southern Section teams were crowned champions Thursday with two more championship games planned for Friday. San Diego, Los Angeles City and Central section champs are still to be crowned.
