Video: Team returns kick the wrong wayA wild play results in a kickoff returned the wrong way for a safety.A play reminiscent of Roy Riegels' "Wrong Way" Rose Bowl run in 1929 and Jim Marshall's similar play for the Vikings against the 49ers in 1964 took place on a high school football field over the weekend.
The team kicking off sends a booming kick down field. The receiving team fumbles it, and it ends up in the hands of the kicking team.
The entire team — and stadium — seems confused on the direction of the play, as the kicking team makes key blocks to allow its player to spring down the field, unfortunately toward its own end zone.
Confusion appears to set in as the receiving team celebrates in the end zone alongside the kicking team.
The referees ruled the play a safety — as opposed to a touchdown for the receiving team — so it only cost the kicking team two points.
The play ended up being inconsequential to the game's outcome, but it was definitely something that doesn't occur every day on the high school football field.
