The Hamilton Southeastern boys basketball team has risen from No. 66 in last year's final MaxPreps' Computer Rankings to its current position of No. 8 in Indiana. The Royals finished with a 15-13 record a year ago, compared to this year's mark of 12-2.
The Royals have lost to No. 2 Warren Central 69-58 and No. 3 North Central 79-68. They are averaging an impressive 75.1 points per game and shooting 53 percent from the field as a team. Zach Gunn, a 6-foot-7 senior, leads the way with averages of 21.3 points and 9.1 rebounds and has been a high double-figure scorer for three years. Jack Davidson, a 6-0 senior, averages 13 points and 6-1 senior Connor Rotterman averages 10.1 points. Close behind is 6-6 sophomore Aaron Etherington at 8.4.
Warren Central definitely is making up for eight losses by five points or less during last year's 10-13 campaign during which it finished at the No. 54 position. The Warriors currently are 12-1 with their only loss to No. 3 North Central by a 69-65 margin. Currently No. 2, they already have beaten No. 8 Hamilton Southeastern 69-58, No. 10 Ben Davis 58-54 and twice defeated highly regarded Lawrence North 63-57 and 52-43.
Fort Wayne North has one of the state's tallest teams and has moved up swiftly from last year's No. 32 ranking to reach No. 4 with a 14-1 record. They rely heavily on their twin towers: 6-10 senior Jaylen Butz and 6-8 sophomore Keion Brooks.
The newly named Legends have beaten Lawrence North 96-82 and their only loss was to Fort Wayne Snider and its 6-11 star, Malik Williams, 76-73 in overtime. Brooks scored 25 points and Butz had 24 points to go with 15 rebounds before a capacity crowd. Williams matched the 24 points and 15 rebounds and drilled four of his team's 15 3-pointers.
