The NFHS Record Book is filled with thousands and thousands of names honoring the very best of high school athletic achievement.
But some of the names in the record book appear more often than others. Some athletes put together high school careers that defy imagination and thus their names find their way into multiple categories and sometimes multiple times in a single category.
This list celebrates the "national record holder record holders." It consists of those athletes who hold the most national records and appear the most times in the national record book. Using a highly unscientific scoring method, each athlete is given three points for holding a national record and one point for being mentioned somewhere on a record list in the record book (but not actually holding the record in that category).
While some all-time football greats such as Michael Hart, Ken Hall and Ben Mauk are obvious inclusions on the list, other record book favorites, such as David Clyde in baseball and Greg Procell in basketball, fall short.
Here's a look at the national record holder record holders.
National Record Holder Record Holders
1. Adrian McGowen, Goodrich (Texas), 2003-06, Girls Basketball - 43 points
When it comes to all-time national records, McGowen holds the record. She set nine national records and is mentioned 16 other times in the book. McGowen is easily the nation's all-time leading scorer with 5,424 career points (more than 900 points better than second place). However she also holds national records for most free throws attempted in a season (1,855), most free throw attempts in a game (44), most average free throw attempts per game in a season (18), most free throw attempts in a season (594), most free throws made in a career (1,258), most free throws made in a game (35), most average free throws made per game in a season (12.4) and most free throws made in a season (409).
2. Ben Mauk, Kenton (Ohio), 1999-2002, Football - 32 points
Although his brother Maty broke several of his records, Ben Mauk still ranks as the top record holder among high school football players. He holds four records and he is mentioned 20 other times in the record book. His records include: Most passing attempts in a season (674, he's also No. 2 with 669), most average passing yards per game in a season (436), most passing yards in a season (6,540) and most total yards in a season (7,928).
3. Bruce Williams, Florien (La.), 1977-80, Boys Basketball - 30 points
Williams is one of several prolific scorers and rebounders from the state of Louisiana, where teams play upwards of 50 games in a regular season. Although he holds eight national records and is mentioned in six others, he is the second all-time leading scorer in national history with 5,367 points. His records include: Most field goals attempted in a career (4,166), most field goals attempted in a season (1,238), most field goals made in a career (2,296), most field goals made in a season (777), most free throws made in a season (502), most career 20-point games (152), most career rebounds (3,059) and most rebounds in a season (1,139).
4. Holly Currie, Pisgah (Ala.), 2000-03, Softball - 23 points
Currie is easily one of the most accomplished softball players in history. Not only does she rank among the greatest hitters of all time, she also ranks among the greatest pitchers. Ironically, several of her national records are not actually considered state records in her home state of Alabama. That is because state records in Alabama include varsity play by seventh- and eighth-graders while the national records do not. She holds four national records and is mentioned 11 other times. Her records include: Most hits in a career (365), most innings pitched in a career (965.2), most wins in a career (159) and most wins in a season (52).
4. Krissy Wendell, Park Center (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), 1998-2000, Girls Ice Hockey - 23 points
When it comes to girls ice hockey, there aren't a whole lot of names listed in the national record book, due mainly to the fact that so few states sanction the sport. However, Wendell is mentioned numerous times among the 11 categories for girls ice hockey. In fact, she holds four national records and is mentioned 11 other times. Her records include: Most points in a season (165), most points in a game (11), most goals in a season (110), most goals in a game (eight, which she did twice).
5. Michael Hart, Onondaga (Nedrow, N.Y.), 2000-03, Football - 21 points

At one time, it looked like Hart might break Ken Hall's all-time rushing record. While he came close, he did shatter all scoring and touchdown records. He still holds three national records and is mentioned 12 other times. His records include: Most career points (1,246), most career rushing touchdowns (204) and most touchdowns per game for a season (5.2).
7. Corinne Wessels, Osbourn Park (Manassas, Va.), 2010-13, Girls Lacrosse - 18 points
Wessels is the highest-scoring girls lacrosse player in history. Besides being a prolific goal-scorer, she also holds national records for assists. In fact, she has tied her own national record for assists in a game twice. When it comes to points in a game, Wessels has seven of the top 10 marks of all time. She holds two national records and is mentioned 12 other times. Interestingly, Wessels' MaxPreps stat pages show her with several assist and point totals that could be included in the national record book but have yet to be submitted. Her official records include: Most points in a season (200) and most assists in a game (11, accomplished three times).
7. Maty Mauk, Kenton (Ohio), 2008-11, Football - 18 points
Mauk's brother Ben might be the all-time national record holder for national records if not for Maty's remarkable four-year performance. Mauk broke five of his brother's marks and is mentioned three other times in the national record book. However, it should be noted that a number of Mauk's passing totals that could be included in the record book are still missing. His records include: Most career completions (1,353), most career attempts (2,110), most career passing yards (18,932), most career total yards (22,681) and most career touchdown passes thrown (219).

7. Ken Hall, Sugarland, 1950-53, Football - 18 points
At one time, Hall held at least 12 national records, including the once-believed-to-be-unbreakable mark of 11,232 career rushing yards. However, the efforts of the likes of Michael Hart and Derrick Henry, as well as
the unearthed exploits of John Giannantonio, have whittled Hall's records down to just two. He is still mentioned 12 other times in the record book. His records include: Most points per game in a season (32.9) and most rushing yards per attempt in a game (47.3).
10. Alisha Glass, Traverse City Central (Mich.), 2003-06, Volleyball - 17 points
Volleyball teams in Michigan play anywhere from 50 to 70 matches per season, and as a result the volleyball portion of the record book is filled with players from the state. Glass is the most prolific of the bunch, as she holds four national records and is mentioned five other times. Her records include: Most blocks in a career (680), most kills in a career (3,584), most aces in a career (937) and most aces in a season (296).
10. Shanna Zolman, Wawasee (Syracuse, Ind.), 1999-2002, Girls Basketball - 17 points
There is no better free throw shooter in the history of girls basketball than Zolman. She holds three of the four longest free throw shooting streaks in national history, including the record of 70 in a row, as well as 63 and 54 in a row. Not surprisingly, she holds all of the free throw percentage records as well. She holds three national records and is mentioned eight other times. Her records include: Most consecutive free throws (70), best free throw percentage in a career (93.5 percent) and best free throw percentage in a season (95.4 percent).
